About the visitor visa
A Canada visitor visa usually lets you stay for up to six months. It comes as a single-entry visa for one visit, or a multiple-entry visa that lets you come and go during its validity.
- It is for tourism and leisure, or for visiting family and friends.
- You can travel with your dependants and children.
- Processing times vary. We give you the current estimate when you apply.
Who can apply
- You can show enough funds to support yourself and your family during your stay.
- You have no criminal record and agree to follow Canadian law.
- You have an invitation letter if you will stay with relatives or friends.
Documents you’ll need
- Passport. Valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from Canada.
- Ties to home. Employment letters, property ownership, family connections or other commitments that show you will return.
- Financial statements. Bank statements or other proof that you can cover your expenses.
- Invitation letter. If you are staying with relatives or friends: their relationship to you, contact details, and the length and purpose of your visit.
- Medical certificate. Only if one is requested.
Applying as a family
Each family member, including children under 18, needs a separate application. You can submit them all together.
Biometrics
Depending on your nationality, you may need to give fingerprints and a photograph.
Your cover letter
A clear cover letter strengthens your application. It should explain:
- Why you are visiting Canada, and what you plan to do there
- How you will pay for the trip, with proof of funds
- Your source of income
- Your Canadian sponsor or host, if you have one, and your relationship to them
- Your flight itinerary
You can apply online, on paper or in person at a Visa Application Centre (VAC).
